GUIDELINES FOR THE MANAGEMENT OF CONTACT DERMATITIS: AN UPDATE

The British Society of Dermatology produce a series of Guidelines. This one on contact dermatitis or contact eczema was published in the British Journal of Dermatology in 2009.

The information is aimed at the medical profession (dermatologists) but may be of interest to some of those known to suffer from the condition.

The words ‘eczema’ and ‘dermatitis’ are often used synony- mously to describe a polymorphic pattern of inflammation, which in the acute phase is characterized by erythema and vesiculation, and in the chronic phase by dryness, lichenification and fissuring. Contact dermatitis describes these patterns of reaction in response to external agents, which may be the result of the external agents acting either as irritants, where the T cell-mediated immune response is not involved, or as allergens, where cell-mediated immunity is involved.
