Head injury : Concussion during sports – info for coaches

Sport is healthy but it can be dangerous too, and one of the biggest worries is head injury. Is it a superficial injury or has the brain been damaged in some way i.e has some type of traumatic brain injury been sustained?
The Centre for Diseases Control and Prevention in the USA has provided some useful information with particular regard to a head injury occurring during winter sports. It particularly focuses on concussion, a type of traumatic brain injury due to a jolt or blow to the head or body that causes the brain to move rapidly in the skull.

Burns and Scalds

Burns and scalds require immediate treatment once the patient has been removed from the offending situation.
This normally involves the immediate use of cold running water over the affected area. Ice should NOT be used and creams, ointments or other greasy substances should NOT be applied.

It is very important to stop the burning process as soon as possible. This may mean removing the person from the area, dousing flames with water, or smothering their body with a blanket to put out any flames. However, do not put yourself at risk of getting burned as well.

First Aid knowledge – a short test

The BBC currently have a small test of first aid knowledge called “First Aid Skills Programme.” It is a good way to learn quickly even if you get the answers wrong. Try it a few times till you get it all right and maybe repeat it every few weeks to refresh your memory.
It covers:
Bleeding and burns….Bone, joint and muscle…..Medical conditions…… Poisoning and allergic……. Respiratory problems……..Resuscitation……. Scene of an emergency.
These activities and interactive videos will introduce you to the core principles of first aid and equip you with skills applicable in everyday life.
The practical techniques and mental checklists will give you the knowledge and confidence to tackle almost any emergency whether you look after children or care for older people.
