Head injury : Concussion during sports – info for coaches

Sport is healthy but it can be dangerous too, and one of the biggest worries is head injury. Is it a superficial injury or has the brain been damaged in some way i.e has some type of traumatic brain injury been sustained?

The Centre for Diseases Control and Prevention in the USA has provided some useful information with particular regard to a head injury occurring during winter sports. It particularly focuses on concussion, a type of traumatic brain injury due to a jolt or blow to the head or body that causes the brain to move rapidly in the skull.

If you are a coach, you can download a wallet card, a clipboard sticker, a guide for coaches, and a symptom poster.

Burns and Scalds

COUNTRY: UK

Burns and scalds require immediate treatment once the patient has been removed from the offending situation.

This normally involves the immediate use of cold running water over the affected area. Ice should NOT be used and creams, ointments or other greasy substances should NOT be applied.

The links given here lead to three separate pages headed “introduction” “treatment” and “recovery.” If you are dealing with a patient who has just been burnt, click on the TREATMENT link first:

It is very important to stop the burning process as soon as possible. This may mean removing the person from the area, dousing flames with water, or smothering their body with a blanket to put out any flames. However, do not put yourself at risk of getting burned as well.
